Maintainance starter kit

With this starter kit you have all the tools and supplies you need for your maintainance jobs. Choose your lubricants from the manufacturers listed in the product overview.

Loco cleaning and lubrication:

• cotton swabs (Q-Tips)
• watchmaker's oiler or very small screwdriver to apply oil on bearings. (sold by watchmaker's or jeweller's supplies).
• small srewdrivers to open / disassemble locos and cars.
  
• motor bearing oil, AeroCar, LaBelle 108 or Dr. Tillwich Sorte 3-5 clock oil. The latter is NOT 100% plastic compatible and should be used with care.
  
• 'conducta lube', conductive oil for electrical pickups and wipers. Use AeroCar or equivalent by Atlas or Bachmann.
  
• gear grease, AeroCar, LaBelle 106 (grease) or 102 (oil) or Dr. Tillwich B 52 are recommended. B 52 grease should be used with care, it may damage some plastics.
  
• isopropanol (rubbing alcohol), 'Zippo' lighter fuel, AeroCar or Tomix track cleaner for wheel cleaning
• small plasticard strips (10 thou thick) may assist you in lifting off the loco body from the chassis
• soft foam service cradle, made by Peco or Uhlenbrock.
  
• Trix or Conrad wheel cleaning brush (block type) or Peco wheel cleaning brush/ scraper set or Micro-Trains 'Speedi' wheel cleaning brush. The latter two need the use of a soft foam servicing cradle to protect your loco, the Trix and Conrad brushes are embedded in a palstic block you can put on a stretch of track. I find the Trix / Conrad block type the easiest to use. In Japan Tsugawa offers a similar device.
• With an AeroCar starterkit (# 4004 for Z,  N and HO scale, # 5005 for larger scales) you have the most important lubricants in one purchase. With a bottle of track cleaner (# 6006 or 6116) you have all the fluids you need.
